What is the most annoying toy that you own? Most likely it is one that makes noise! What if I could tell you that you can take one of those annoying toys and turn it into a very educational activity? I bet I’ll have you sold after this Mozart activity.
LESSON
I had a lot of fun with this lesson for a few reasons:
- We listened to Mozart. This in itself was so relaxing. Liam used his Listening Sheet to analyze three of Mozart’s songs and I listened to my son NOT talk for a few minutes!
2. I had a lot of fun WITH him composing our very own songs on the toy xylophone we have (that usually is just a contraption to beat on mercilessly until I feel a headache coming on). Head over to my Instagram page if you want to hear some of our amazing pieces!
He also composed a tune (or two or three or four…) on the computer. This was great because he got to see the musical notation. We’ll be learning about that at the end of the year but it was good for him to begin to see the musical notes written down as he ‘composed’ his song.
It’s been a lot of fun learning about Mozart straight after our lessons on musical instrument families. Liam, without being prompted, kept pointing out the instruments he was hearing…and pretending to play them too. You didn’t think he spent the WHOLE time just listening and analyzing the music did you?
What We Learned
By the end of the lesson, he was able to:
- analyze three of Mozart’s pieces
- compose his own musical piece
He also now has a good understanding of many new vocabulary words such as:
- instrumental
- classical
- opera
- composer

Other Great Resources
Here are some great resources that are not included in my Lesson Plan but that I felt were still worth mentioning. And I’m sure I’ll come back to these when we have space time throughout our week.
