On the TV was a scrolling video montage of Claude Monet paintings. It had been there for at least ten minutes before anyone spotted it. But once it was spotted the questions started coming:
“What’s that?”
“Are those paintings?”
“Did you paint those?”
“Who painted those?”
“Is that a beach?”
“What is that?”
“Mom, what’s on the TV?”
It was the perfect way to get them interested in what could be a boring lesson about an old painter. But now they were intrigued.
LESSON
I let them keep asking questions about the paintings for a little while. I guided them to noticing all the bright colors he used in almost every painting.
We had a great discussion (for two five year olds that is) using the Read Aloud and then headed outside for an art project much like Monet enjoyed doing.
What We Learned
By the end of the lesson, they were able to:
- recount facts about Claude Monet
- create their own artwork resembling Field of Tulips in Holland
They also now has a good understanding of many new vocabulary words such as:
- Claude Monet
- easel
- tulips
- Holland
- windmill
My entire lesson plan and the lesson Read Aloud can be purchased here.
Here’s a little secret, though. Any Glue Sticks and Games blog subscriber receives these materials FREE in their inbox each week! So, snag your copy of this lesson and then sign up to get the rest of the year for free!
