Is there anything more fun for kids than mixing together…well, anything? Dirt and water? Cookie dough? Cake batter? Rocks and sand? Paint?
Honestly, the dirtier the better right? For them at least. Not me.
I used to cringe anytime we’d go to the creek and Liam would want to mix dirt and creek water. It’s NEVER a clean activity. And then throw in some rocks and bugs and he’d have some fine mixtures going on.
Mixing is fun, plain and simple. I much prefer the results of a good cookie dough mixture but that’s just me!
What We Did
We had friends come over for our art class again this week which makes it so much more fun.
We read the simplest book about color mixing…yet so cute. There’s not much cuter than a little rabbit hopping into bowls of paint is there?
Afterwards, we did some color experimenting…
…and then got to work painting. I found these cute Mickey Mouse paint plates at Dollar Tree. Six for a dollar! And it was perfect for them to experiment with their color mixing and the color wheel.
There’s just something about watching children really concentrate on a project. Both the older ones were very intentional about keeping their paint within the lines and making sure that they mixed each secondary color well.
What We Learned
By then end of the lesson, they were able to:
- identify primary and secondary colors
- create secondary colors
- create their own work of art only given three primary colors
They also now has a good understanding of many new vocabulary words such as:
- primary colors
- secondary colors
My entire lesson plan, lesson Read Aloud and printables can be purchased here.
Here’s a little secret, though. Any Glue Sticks and Games blog subscribers receive these materials FREE in their inbox each week! So, snag your copy of this lesson and then sign up to get the rest of the year for free!
Other Great Resources
Here are some great resources that are not included in my Lesson Plan but that I felt were still worth mentioning. And I’m sure I’ll come back to these when we have space time throughout our week.

My youngest would love to do these. Thank you for sharing. I now have some new activites to share with her.
This is such a great project. We love art
This is such a fun art project for littles. And the graphic designer in me is loving that some new words and phrases in their vocabulary includes things like “primary and secondary colors.”
The more you use big vocabulary words the more likely they are to learn them 🙂
This looks like so much fun! My kids love anything where they can get messy with paint, so this would be a hit for sure!
Just use washable paint. Seems so obvious but I’ve made the mistake of not using it!! 🙂
We’ve had paint mixing as an assigned activity for awhile now. This makes me not so nervous to take it on!!!
You’ve got it!
