So Many Lines! - Glue Sticks and Games

We were so excited to start a new art unit this week. We had a good time learning all about mixing colors and how both James Whistler and Claude Monet paid such close attention to the colors in their paintings. But, I’d say Liam and I were both ready for something new. So our line art activity and lesson came at the perfect time!

Lesson

The concept of ‘line’ is not that hard to understand. And by early elementary most children have a common knowledge of different types of lines whether they realize it or not. He was able to draw all sorts before we even began the lesson but didn’t necessarily know what each one was called.

This week, we had family in town so our lesson was quite casual. The book I had picked out was not available at the library so he cuddled up on the couch and listened to it on YouTube with his Pa.

Afterwards, we practiced drawing more lines using a poster as a guide, played a matching game to really practice the correct names of each line, went on a line scavenger hunt around the house and then created a fun hot air balloon line art activity!

What We Learned

By the end of the lesson, he was able to:

identify different types of lines
demonstrate his knowledge of line by creating a Hot Air Balloon project

He also now has a good understanding of many new vocabulary words such as:

line
straight
curved
zigzag
wavy
spiral
