I played the recorder in fifth grade and the clarinet in sixth through eighth grades. With four years of lessons, I can only still play Hot Cross Buns.
With the purchase of the recorder for Liam a few weeks bet I’m betting I might be able to pick-up a Christmas song or two…if only I knew where the recorder has ended up!
LESSON
The nice thing about a homeschool lesson is that it doesn’t have to be super official. Honestly, on Sunday evening Liam asked to do his music lesson because he saw the print outs on the printer.
I truly wasn’t “feeling it” but knew we needed to. So I grabbed the Read Aloud and Picture Cards and while he drank his fresh squeezed lemonade (made by him the night before) we just had a conversation about the different wind instruments.
After a few YouTube videos to show the instruments in action we whipped up our very own wind instruments and called the lesson a win.
This ten minute lesson showed me that teaching doesn’t have to be stressful. He was excited to learn, I had a lesson plan to go off of and he now has a bit more knowledge of one more instrument family!
What We Learned
By then end of the lesson, they were able to:
- explain what makes an instrument a woodwind instrument
- create their own wind instrument
He also now has a good understanding of many new vocabulary words such as:
- flute
- clarient
- oboe
- bassoon
My entire lesson plan and the lesson Read Aloud can be purchased here.
Here’s a little secret, though. Any Glue Sticks and Games blog subscriber receives these materials FREE in their inbox each week! So, snag your copy of this lesson and then sign up to get the rest of the year for free!
Other Great Resources
Here are some great resources that are not included in my Lesson Plan but that I felt were still worth mentioning. And I’m sure I’ll come back to these when we have space time throughout our week.

This is so creative. I bet your kids love it.
HAHAHAHA I so remember the recorder. Plus 2 of my kids brought one home from school. I can also still play hot cross buns.
So cute! Love for the recorder and clarinet! My toddler is starting to love music! We should do this soon!
Me too! I love the straw instrument, very creative!
I was a brass player back in the day and could never understand how woodwinds worked. Those reeds always seemed so tricky to me!
I played the clarinet and the whole reed thing was always strange (and gross) to me too 🙂
This looks like so much fun! I am a flute player and former music teacher and I need to do more lessons like this with my kids!
My kids are starting to like to play a musical instruments and I am pretty sure that they will have a lot of fun doing this activity with me. Thank you!
Sometimes you just have to go with the flow when your kids are interested in a topic! I love how you made your own instruments. Both of my older kiddos played the recorder, but I have no idea where it is right now… 😉
I love this! I played clarinet in band, so I would love to introduce my daughter to wood winds.
This is a wonderful skill that we can teach our kids! Learning a musical instrument is such a good hobby. Thanks for this!
