Imagine this. You’ve just walked into a room. Laying on the table is a blank piece of paper and some paint and crayons. How do you feel? Excited? Energized? Or maybe nervous or inadequate?
Why Do Art?
It is so important for younger children to DO art. They should draw, paint, cut, glue, make things of clay, feathers, beads or any kinds of materials.
Art can happen just about anytime. It does not have to be some elaborate, planned activity. Simply grabbing some materials and allowing your child to use their imagination works! My oldest son has made plenty of art projects using rocks and mud while hanging out by the river.
But, seeing and thinking about art is also so influential.
This school year I will be following the guide of Core Knowledge’s First Grade art objectives to create my homeschool art lessons. Our year will look like this:
I would love for you to follow along and learn all about art along side of us. These homeschool art lessons are sure to teach your child (and you!) something. We will:
- Learn art techniques.
- Create our own pieces of art using the techniques we learn.
- Learn about specific works of art.
- Have educated discussions about famous works of art.
- Learn about famous artists.
- Learn about what art “is” and how it began.
Just subscribe to be the first to know about what we are learning…and learn with us!
What are your feelings towards making or teaching art?

My daughter loves art and we have a dedicated table and area for her. Thanks for the info!!
I’m not very artistic, but I love watching little ones with paint all over their hands and faces discovering all the beauty in the world.
Thank you. With my little one at home while her brother and sister at school, I am always stuck for ideas. This helps so much.
Great ideas! Right now, my daughter is really into coloring and painting. Love seeing her creative mind at work.
This is such a fun year long art plan! Any child would love this art schedule!
I set up an arts and crafts area a long time ago. My teenage daughter still uses it which I love.
Lovely. Bet my son would love this kind of art activity.
Thanks for the breakdown of the topics to cover. I am excited to start this when my LO is old enough.
Great curriculum for art!!
I’ve always felt like I’m not the best person to teach my kids art. So thankfully we are part of a co-op where the kids get to have an art class once a week.
This is a really cool kids art lesson plan. I have always thought art to be of upmost importance.
This looks like fun! I definitely need to do more intentional art lessons with my kids.
this sounds like a fun art lesson plan… i used to volunteer as a art docent in my kids’ elementary school and it was fun to be part of the process creating art lessons and a schedule for the year..
Art lessons are always fun. I loved my art classes when i was at school. But never took it further. However art classes as an adult is not a bad idea at all.
This would be a great activity to do with my 2 toddlers. My 4 yr old loves doing arts and crafts. Thanks for the plan!
I agree that Core Knowledge is a great place to start for homeschoolers and regular school, as well – whether it be art or any other discipline. Thanks for sharing!
I love when other people love Core Knowledge π
I definitely signed up because I struggle with teaching art!
I love this. I do a lot of process art but itβs important to intentionally teach art skills to get there!
I know what you mean about feeling nervous with a blank page in front of me! This outline looks great and still allows for flexibility π
