I was a very picky eater as a kid. OK, those that are reading this and know me would probably argue that I still am. But as a kid I really was.

One of the few go-to breakfasts that I can remember were Poptarts. But, as a true picky eater, it could only be the strawberry kind. And half the time I think I only ate the inside. Why is it that kids just don’t like crust?

So when I found a recipe on Pinterest, I just knew it would be a home run for Liam.

Few Ingredients

I am not known for my cooking skills but I have certainly improved in recent years. But, I still base a recipe on how many ingredients are listed.

And I don’t mean ‘the more the better’. If there are too many ingredients listed, I move on to the next recipe. I don’t have time to search my spice cabinet for 6 spices to make taco seasoning.

This recipe only has four ingredients so I knew it was a perfect one for Liam to help me with.

Few Steps

Liam loves to be in the kitchen but let’s face it – he’s six. He only lasts so long before a mess is made and his patience is gone.

This recipe was exactly what he could do.

Don’t get me wrong. Maybe the homemade poptarts from Sally’s Baking Addiction taste better to a food critic. I mean, she does make her own pastry dough!

But, I can promise you that these are great. And, more importantly, your little chef can follow my easy recipe card with no help (or almost no help) from you! It use lots of pictures to make the directions easy!

He enjoyed rolling out the dough, helping to cut and spreading the jam. And of course spreading the icing and SPRINKLES!

I had to take a few deep breaths and realize perfection was not required…but man, they tasted good when they were done! Even little brother got in on the action!

STEP BY STEP

1. Turn oven to 425°. Put parchment paper on baking sheet.

2. Unroll pie crust. With knife, cut each crust into six rectangles. You will need to cut off the curved edges.

3. Scoop 1-2 teaspoons of jam into the middle of a rectangle and spread.

4. Put another rectangle on top.

5. Use a fork to push down the edges so they stick together. Repeat until there are no more pie crust pieces.

6. Place all pop tarts on baking sheet. Put in oven for 10 minutes.

7. After they have cooled, frost them with icing and put on sprinkles!

Perfect For Young Chefs

So often children want to be a chef in the kitchen. I was constantly wasting ingredients in my parents pantry to make my own recipes. And Liam does the same! I started going to the Dollar Tree just to buy cheap spices and supplies for him to “cook” with.

But he’s old enough now that he can follow simple directions and actually make something edible!

This recipe card uses plenty of pictures so that a child can do most everything themselves (with the exception of the oven for the younger ones!

Can I Use Other Fillings?

Of course! There are all kinds of preserves at the grocery store. I plan on trying some more and switching it up…but let’s be honest. I like the strawberry best as a kid and I don’t think much has changed.
