There’s just something about Ancient Egypt that is exciting. Maybe it’s the strangeness of mummies or the uniqueness of the pyramids or the marvel of pharaohs.
Whatever the reason it is always fascinating no matter the age.
God did some crazy aligning of the stars these last few weeks in our house. One of the Core Knowledge units I wanted to do with Liam this year was about Ancient Egypt. Funnily enough, last week at school (he goes to a school with a university model meaning that I homeschool him three days a week and he goes in-person two days) they began studying Ancient Egypt.
His teacher assigned a diorama project due next month and told us to do some research on our own as well. I couldn’t think of a perfect (or easier) way to learn more than the Core Knowledge unit!
The Lesson
We had friends come over for our lesson this week! In true teacher fashion, we all sat down, looked at some books, talked all about Ancient Egypt, and watched some videos. Then we got to work on our projects…making ourselves into a pharaoh!
Which, fun fact, pharaohs could be male or female. Maybe I already knew that? I’m not sure but the girls were certainly excited about learning that.
What We Learned
By then end of the lesson, they were able to:
- explain where some of the earliest paintings were found
- create their Egyptian pharaoh (paper) bust
They also now has a good understanding of many new vocabulary words such as:
- ancient
- Egypt
- pharaohs
- tomb
- bust
