Liam and I watched a video last week touring North America. It’s amazing the vastness of this continent. Honestly, just the enormity and diverseness of the United States of America is mind boggling. You could see something new every year of your life without needing a passport and never get bored.
The videos of the large moose in the north to the crocodiles in the south is intriguing. Or the pictures of snow covered mountains, prairies and beaches. It’s amazing to me that all of this is within a days plane flight.
But, no matter how pretty the snow covered Rocky Mountains were or how majestic the moose looked, every part of me watching the video wanted to be with the Caribbean beaches and not the Rocky Mountains.
I am just born for warm weather.
I remember days (that seem so long ago yet just yesterday) when I would pray for a snowflake on the weather map. The anticipation was like waiting for Christmas. And this wasn’t just when I was a child. This was within the last five years!
There’s just something about snow days in the South. Waking up to a blanket of white snow. Pulling out the dusty snow clothes. Making my best attempt at a snowman. Being “snowed in”. Movies and pajamas all day. And then you blink and it’s gone. If you’re lucky it would last 24 hours. Other times, it was gone by noon.
Here Comes the Snow
September 29 was our first snowfall of the year here in Bozeman. We almost made it to October!
A little snow didn’t stop us from heading to breakfast before going to church either.
Liam might not look happy in the picture above but once we got home he was ready to play in the snow. So, out came the snow clothes (on day four of fall) and we headed outside.
There wasn’t that much snow, truthfully. Maybe an inch and a half. But the snow that was there was PERFECT for building. I had always wondered how people actually rolled snowballs. Have you ever rolled them? I never was able to back east. I used to just pack, pack, pack until it looked somewhat like a ball. But here it’s possible and the snowman making is so much easier. And rolling the ball around the snow was as fun to me as building the snowman. Something about watching the ball get bigger and bigger as I left a trail was amusing to me.
Liam had all kinds of grand plans for us so none of them actually got finished. First, he wanted to build a snowman. Then he wanted to build a snowman family. Then a wall around the snowmen. Then a fort.
Lake, on the other hand, has not officially got to enjoy the snow yet. And judging by how he felt about having to wear layers of clothes to breakfast and church, I’m not so sure he’ll be a snow bunny just yet.
We completed our snow day with homemade bread bowls, homemade soup and snow cream! Potato soup has always been my go-to. That or a meaty chili. What’s your go-to soup or chili?
So, after our first snow of the year, it has warmed back into the 60s today which was glorious. But Mother Nature must be in a bad mood because tomorrow we are dropping into the 20s as a high for the next two days (with lows in the single digits!!!) and are expected to get 6 or more inches of snow.
I’m sitting here staring at the forecast and it makes me want to laugh and cry all at the same time. So, I have said good bye to my legs for the next nine months. From here on out they will be covered in one (or two or three) layers at all times, both day and night.
A New Sport
Here’s to enjoying the winter and not completely becoming a hermit. With this in mind, I signed Liam up for ice skating lessons and he started yeson Sunday. He’s only been on the ice once and that was two winters ago. And he was not much of a fan back then.
This time when he hit the ice he was a bit apprehensive but within a few minutes had gained confidence and was all smiles as he fell down on the ice. Who knows, maybe next year he’ll have a stick in his hand! Hockey’s not dangerous…right?!
I really shouldn’t be too shocked by Montana’s weather now. Take a look at this post from a few years back.
